CBSE results and us

An Open Letter to All Those Students Who Feel That They Aren't 'Satisfied' With Their Results

Every year, when the final examination result comes out, students across the globe go through a series of varied emotions. While some feel overjoyed, some seem to be extremely disappointed.
The ones who say they're disappointed, guys, who shall you blame for your disappointment? The school? The board? The subject? The teacher? Or you??
The answer is 'no-one'!
Yes, it sounds pretty #easiersaidthandone kind.. but the reality lies in the fact that once we start this 'blame-game', we deviate our focusses from things that actually matter.
I know most of you aren't satisfied with your marks but you can't blame anyone for this. See the most important thing is to achieve the aim ofyour life and not to achieve some numbers. This blame- game will only shade the beautiful soul in you while the jealous part of you starts taking over your personality. And then ask yourself if it is okay that some numbers starts changing you for bad.
Basics are something we stand upon but forget eventually. Like how many of us never tend to forget the real motive of examinations..Why are they held in the first place! To compete? No! They are to check how much knowledge we've acquired. They're an assessment of oneself rather than a community competition!
There's this fact that no one knows you better than yourself, which is acknowledged by almost everyone but ends up being ignored. So considering this, no examiner has the power to sign your failure sheet, rather it's just a guide to a new way of learning. It's we, ourselves who decide whether we've to move further or take a turn backwards.
'Satisfaction' is a strong word but often misused. If you're not satisfied, then it's because you ought to work more to make your inner self satisfied. Not that you have all the rights in the world to lose your hopes and give up.
Yeah being competitive is good but keep this in mind that you need to honour others effort while taking pride in what you achieved. Life is all about shaping a better future while learning from your past. It's never short of opportunities for you to get yourself to success. Failures aren't to be scared of, their mere existence is to make us learn.
So stand up, look in the mirror and question yourself "Did I give in my 100%?" If the answer 'Yes!', you're inner soul is already satisfied, go with the same flow. And if by any chance, it's 'No!', then what are you waiting for? Just knock it off by showing what you're capable of!
Remember, it may be a bad day, a bad week or a bad year, but after all it's not a bad life!
Rather than staying positive, stay REAL and work for what you aspire with every breath of yours...until the end..

Just me talking to myself

Life, I guess has it's own ways of going on..
Everything goes pretty well and then something strikes or an incident happens which shakes you up and brings about petty changes and these are actually a disguise of a whole new life because they melt our present life and give it a fresh unwelcomed updated shape which we are bound to hold on to, no matter how much we want to leave..

I guess the rules aren't gonna change for me and here's this phase where my everything is changing and as of now it seems, it's changing for the worse to come.

The new decade, marking the beginning of my adulthood has come into my life like a thunderstorm and it has shattered it to pieces.. pieces I am unable to put back to place no matter how hard I try.

People often see other's life to be some sort of perfection goal, but little do we know about how something is; atleast not until we're dwelling in it ourselves.

I remember how I was the goal of optimism. I was always positive towards life whatever the situation may be and that kind of made my biggest strengths. I was never the type of a brainless-bimbo who would just go around mourning over any failure, instead failures were always a lesson to me  and I always made sure to get a way out of the mess with my soul quote being 'If you're considering something as your failure, it means a part of you has stopped wishing for  that particular thing!'. But I guess, it's not the same forever, huh? Here I am being a complete opposite version of myself.

Looking at myself, I often wonder is it just me being a sleep addict or is it me trying to avoid facing the new me? Sadly, I'm unable to find an answer to it..
Answers..well as of now, there's literally nothing I'm able to reason out. Everything seems to be falling apart and it's like I'm standing at the very edge watching myself dying and this..this very feeling is suffocating me.

They say If you feel stressed, talk to people more, engage yourself in something you love. Well..yeah! I believe this. But what should I do with the feeling of 'not wanting to socialize'? Okay..leaving that aside, I sat to write, but the words don't seem to be interested in the new me; I sat to draw, but again, the colours seem to be at a cold war with me, being totally uncooperative in giving me the satisfaction and serene feeling which I need. Songs, poetry, art, literature..all my hobbies have turned their backs to me as if they've been alienated. It's like Therese no way out of this lonely new world and all I can do is to think, think and overthink. My new mates have replaced my old true ones; the new one being headache though, but does it really count? It's like my life is all about burry my head in my pillow and mourning over my inability to get out of these thoughts that are disturbing and eating me alive.

I've heard, when an artist paints what he feels, it turns out to be one of his best art pieces. What actually matters here is his feelings and the same I guess goes with me, I'm unable to express myself as I'm scared to let these thoughts out and when I do my efforts shout out my helplessness; if only I could give reasons to it, if only I had someone listening to these silent screams.

I, who was once a self-lover me has changed into a person who's jealous of almost everyone around, who taunts herself for being the most imperfect person ever. I literally look for reasons to make others superior than me while I leave out the actual cause of my suffering; which is that I'm jealous of them living their "happy" lives where they're "themselves"!.

My heart sinks realising how much I've changed. It doesn't want to admit that I'm 'not fine', I need someone or something that accepts me to be myself, that can give me back my lost confidence in myself. I want that old busy me, the happy me...
These sleepless nights, however, never fail to give me a reality check that I'm not returning anytime soon. Whether I want it or not, I'm stuck in a world which isn't mine and maybe there's no way out of it.

All I keep on wishing is for my guardian angel to come soon and rescue me from here because I'm dying.. I'm dying to live my own life.

However, at the end..it's just me talking to myself in this lone new world....

''Don't you think sometimes getting away from everything and having a long break is enough to start afresh.?'

'Eh..maybe.. but if 'everything' here refers to your problems, then they'll return..even if you start afresh..so the best way to not have them is to face them rather than running away..'

'Seriously..dude?..why do you always have to be oppositely correct?..this trap's gonna last long I guess'.

Are We Forgetting Our Seven Sisters?

Do you feel well connected to The Seven Sister states of North-Eastern India named as "A PARADISE UNEXPLORED" by a journalist in 1972 during the inaugural foundation of the north east states or are you also a bit disconnected from the traditions and ways of this perversely neglected part of our diverse nation?

INTRODUCTION TO THE SEVEN SISTERS

The seven sisters are the seven states in the north-eastern India namely,
Arunachal Pradesh
Assam
Meghalaya
Manipur
Mizoram
Nagaland
Tripura

They are called the seven sisters provided their similarities in terms of geographical features, and their interdependence in political, social, and economic spheres. However, they show great diversity in cultural and ethics.

Let us get to know some facts about these states which would surely mesmerize anyone and make them wonder of the beauty and serenity of this part.

FACTS THAT MAKE THESE STATES SPECIAL

  • Arunachal Pradesh marks the gateway entry for India in geographic terms.
  • These states are connected to the mainland via "Siliguri Corridor" also known as the "Chicken's Neck" which is a thin land which shares it's borders with Myanmar, Bhutan, Bangladesh and China.
  • This region of the country has proudly attained it's title as "India's Cleanest Region".
  • These are the only states which the Mughal Emperors Failed to conquer in their 200-year old rule. Guess how powerful their Ahom Dynasty's rule had been. Shocking right?
  • The literacy rate here is higher than the average of the rest of the country. How fascinating in India is a place where local villagers speak English, right? Sadly, these facts are long neglected and kept away even from our sub-conscious minds.
  • There are 220 different languages spoken in just these 7 states with 220 ethnic groups; dominant of which are Assamese and Bengali. How well is the diversity held here!
  • If we're talking about diversity, the states are world's one of the 7 areas with richest biodiversity.
  • They are packed with greenery, rich culture and therapeutic beauty.
  • They are home to 70% of the total world's orchids.
  • They are a host to seven National Parks and also, the smallest river island Umananda is a part of these states.
  • India is regarded as the second largest tea producer in the world and the credit undoubtedly goes to our very own seven sister states which produce more tea than the tea produced by the rest of the nation.
  • The world's wettest place "Mawsynram" in Meghalaya brings another fascination to the glories the seven sisters.
  • Baichung Bhutia (Footballer), Mary Kom (Boxing Champion), Arnab Goswami (Journalist) are some of the internationally famous figures who have brought glory to our prestigious country in their fields and they belong to the proud seven sister states.

HOW HAS THE MAINLAND NEGLECTED A PRESTIGIOUS PART OF THE COUNTRY?

It's a matter of shame that our history books significantly glorify the rule of various rulers but fail to mention the significance of this part of the country. it's sad to notice that we hardly know about the importance of this heritage of ours which deserves to be immensely valued and taken care of.

If we take into our consideration various platforms, we will notice how side lined are our seven sister states. For an instance, Bollywood movies are typically based on the lifestyle and people in the mainland of India. Places like Delhi, Mumbai and even the southern states are mentioned very often but the north-eastern side isn't given much importance.

We all are well aware of the cultures and languages of almost all the parts of the Indian Subcontinent but are we equally thorough with the north-eastern tradition too?

NO! right? Only some of us are.

Despite having an interesting and diversified lifestyle, they're simply ignored. In fact, many find it difficult to establish the difference that the natives of the seven sister states are Indians and not someone belonging to the border countries. An instance of this we saw in the movie "Chak De India" where the girls from the eastern side were misunderstood to be either from some tribe or from some other country of the east by their fellow teammates.

The government too shows a constant negligence towards these states and it is because of this there has been a drop in the employment rates.
There has been almost zero economic development projects taken inn order to uplift their standards with the rest of the India.

Apart from the dance forms, the north-eastern part of India has been a mystery and the gap seems to be continuously widening up.

The important facts of the states (as are stated above) are not very well appreciated or nurtured. The evidence to which is that none of them were regarded amongst the top ten tourist places in India which is costing the loss to Indian tourism and is a sheer disrespect and wastage of this unrecognised beauty.

The north-eastern India seems alienated since long due to the differences in looks, culture and attitude of government towards the seven sister states. However, we ought to conserve this affluent culture and heritage as it's vibrant domain adds a whole new dimension to the diversity of our beautiful country!

Ours is the land of culture and diversity and it's our duty to value and protect it!

A Bad Day or a Good One?

It's a part of human nature to confide in words that are heard repeatedly from various sources. Those words, over a period of time, take the form of belief of an individual. Some call it mere belief or some name it as superstition.

One such superstition is that if a day is started wrongly, it'll end up being messed.

Why I am calling it a superstition is because I don't believe in it as my take on this saying is a little different.

I consider that we live every day as a periodic cycle and it constitutes 7 major divisions which are

  1. Eat
  2. Work
  3. Rest
  4. Play
  5. Suffer
  6. Recover
  7. Repeat

Generally, we start our day, freshen up, have breakfast to get in nutrition which provides energy to work all day; we indulge ourselves in our regular day-to-day activities and also spend some fun or leisure time. But amongst all this schedule of ours, god challenges us every single day with a new task to check our abilities
And we, most of the time go through a little suffering and gradually we find a way to complete that particular task and this step we can call as recovery. Before repeating the routine the very next day, we rest to give ourselves a break.

Now if we take all these in account, when a person sees a bad dream, practically at that time he's sleeping, that is, he's in his 'rest' part of the day.

But the dream being bad, he suffers, maybe it's beyond expectations and the dream awakens him, makes him cry. But then suddenly he realises, "Oh! It's a dream", and he gets into reality, come over it and thus recovers.

So in this form, a bad dream is no less than a prize from God, a situation where the almighty has given you a chance to not let any other hurdle or obstacle make you suffer for the day since you're already done with that part.

So all you're now left with is eat, work and play with so much extra time.

I guess the deal isn't bad huh?

So how about reconsidering the statement that 'If a day is started wrongly, it'll end up being messed'. I guess now I have well conveyed that instead of being messed, this very day can be one of the bests because you can make the most out of it.

At the end, all depends on our own perception of things.

'If we take the  positive path, it'll bring glory
Or the choice is ours we can keep on feeling sorry.'

Next time, you get a bad morning dream, feel free to think you're god's favourite and that he's blessed you with a day full of opportunities!

The Harappan CIvilisation

Sitting in front of my laptop, at this moment I was all by myself in my room with my e-book opened. You know when we start re-reading something we’ve already read we have that ‘deja vu’ feeling that ‘Yeah man I know this!’, and instead of going through it again we start jumping off from one page to the other. I was busy reminiscing my class sixth days when I caught hold off the moment where I decided that I will become an IAS officer. Well this story would be good for another day but for now I realised that I should go through the book from the beginning. So, I began....

So let me take you all through the worn-off pages of those history books which we’ve long forgotten.

THE INDUS VALLEY CIVILISATION or THE HARAPPAN CIVILISATION dates back to 3500 BC. It followed the CHALCOLITHIC CULTURE.

It was broadly divided into three phases:
  • The Early Harappan Phase: 3500 BC- 2600 BC
  • The Mature Harappan Phase: 2600 BC- 1900 BC
  • The Late Harappan Phase: 1900 BC- 1400 BC

There were 13 major Harappan Sites which were:

S.no.

Excavated in 1958
12.
Sutkagendor
On Makran Coast
Excavated in 1928;
Western most site
13.
Alamgirpur
Western Uttar Pradesh
Excavated in 1959;
Eastern most side

From the above we get to know about the structural remains found from different sites which are:
  • Great Bath in Mohenjo Daro.
  • Granary in Mohenjo Daro and Harappa.
  • Dockyard in Lothal.
  • Bronze Dancing girl figurine in Mohenjo Daro.
  • Stone sculpture of a bearded man(a bust of a priest) at Mohenjodaro.

If we talk about the Economic Activities of the Harappan people, then we infer the following:

Agriculture was the base of economy.
  • Plough-cultivation was practiced.
  • Irrigation was done through wells or river channels.
  • Chief crops were wheat, barley, sesasum, mustard, peas and jejube.
  • Rice, fish and animal meat were also a part of the diet.

Industries and craft evidences are found.
  • Almost all metals (gold, silver, copper), except iron are found.
  • Stone tools and ornaments are also found.
  • Evidences of pottery-making and seal making are also found. Wheels were generally made having red coating and black designs. Seals were made of steatite, generally square in shape.
  • There wasn’t any representation of horse on seals which predicts that horses weren’t known to people.
  • The most famous seal is of PASHUPATI (Lord of Beasts), also known as ‘proto-shiva’. It has three heads and is sitting in a yogic posture surrounded by 4 animals that are elephant, tiger, rhinoceros and a buffalo.
    Lord Pashupati

Trade sector dealt with contacts to foreign lands particularly ‘Mesopotamia’. Trade in Mesopotamian cities of ‘Susa’ and ‘Ur’ was through Oman and Bahrain in Persian Gulf.

Following are some of the trading materials which were found at different locations:

  • Copper- Khetri mines in Rajasthan
  • Silver- Jwar mines in Rajasthan

Bead-Making stones:
  • Lapiz-Lazuli- Badaksham mines in Afghanistan
  • Turquoise and Jade- Central Asia
  • Agate, Carnelian, Chalcedony- Western India
  • Seashells- Gujarat
  • Timber- Northern India (Jammu)

The Society, Religion And Script Of the Harappan Civilisation

The  civilisation was Matriarchal. There are more female figurines than the male ones. Also, goddesses were worshipped more.

The harappan religion was called as Animism i.e. worship of trees, stones, etc. The worshipped linga (phallus) and yoni. Animal worship and fire worship was also practiced. There were several professions prevalent amongst the harappan people which are:
Script of Harappan People

  • Priests
  • Warriors
  • Peasants
  • Traders
  • Artisans

The dead bodies of harappan people were rested in North-South direction with their feet towards South and head towards North. Also, there are evidences of symbolic burials found from Kalibangan which is burial which contains pots but no bones or skeleton.

Evidences show that the harappan people were literate. Their written script contained about 400 signs and was written from right to left. The language which they spoke was “Brahui” which is at present used by Baluchi people in Pakistan.

Decline of The Harappan Civilisation

The beginning of post urban phase (or late harappan phase) was characterised by gradual disappearance of traits such as town planning, art of writing, uniformity in weights and measures, homogeneity in pottery designs, etc. This led to the gradual decline and during the decline of the Harappan civilisation, Mohenjo Daro reduced to a small settlement of 3 hectares from original 85 hectares towards the end of late phase.

Reflection of an Unheard Soul

Being the first baby in the family after around three decades, she had the most complacent childhood which anyone would kill for! Love, affection, care, appreciation, skills, support she had it all served in a silver plate. She was a princess in her own little world. There was no place for fairy tales in her life as it would be a lie if I said she was anywhere less than them. Though she was living in this world of sorrow, she had a parallel world full of happiness as hers was a life which started with “a happily ever after”.  But here is all the irony, how can something be so perfect? Even in those fictitious fairytales, the princess is the one who suffers initially, so how could this cruel world give her the privilege of having pure happiness? Could she really be an exception to the norms of this beautiful religion called “life”?

Well no, she couldn’t! Just like the “Little Mermaid” was confused about ‘how a world that makes such wonderful things could be bad’, she also didn’t know the difference. But the fate had it in store for her because every Beauty’s life is waiting for a Beast, and no this beast isn’t a good one, but the problems planned by her fate because no matter how dreamy the story may seem, life isn’t perfect.

Living in that parallel, carefree world, dancing to the tunes of her own melancholy songs as if she was one of the “twelve dancing princesses”,  though her life started perfectly, but it proved to become worse with each passing year she lived. Gradually she found the fact that the world she’s been living in is soon going to change completely.

But let me not jump to that part quite right now. Let’s first go on a tour to what her life was. She was seen as a blessing at the time of her birth, as if she brought rain in drought, warmth to the winter winds or life to the lifeless ones around and so was she treated, with utmost love and care from everyone around. She never failed on whatever was expected from her. From topping the academics to being a cultural diva, from sports to socialising, she was one of her kind in whatever she did, she was a warrior like “Mulan” who lived by her own rules and didn’t care about any culture based norm which attempted to cage her. The best of friends one could ever have, the best companion to be with. And that was why she made friends wherever she went, she had the sparks which made her glow and made others follow, but she was not the one who wanted followers, she was a leader kind who wanted companions, she was more like a “Snow White to every Seventh Dwarf” and that’s what described her nature.

Nature, the way a person is.. there was much to her personality, the deeper you dig, the more you would find, and the more interesting it gets. But the main problem lies here, the more interesting it gets, the more you’ll get stuck in there, all messed up and so was she, finding it difficult to go on with the situations she regularly had to deal with. Things seem perfect from for away, but the truth is known to the ones dealing with them.

She had lots of friends with no hatred inside her, but gradually things changed. As Snow White was about to being murdered by her own step-mother just for being beautiful, She got betrayed by a dozen of them just for being different and self-reliant. Though her self-respect kept her unaffected, what posed a problem for her was her optimism towards people’s behaviour. When I heard “ek cheez jo hume pata hai hum kabhi nhi karenge, or fir ek din hum kar bhi dete hai, just like that!” (Something we never believed we'll ever do and then one day we ended up doing it, just like that) from Love Aaj Kal, I could easily make out how relatable it was to the people around her but she failed to realise this. When she was left with a very few gems in her life, she tried every possible way of trusting them to the core and differentiated them from others; but to her despondence everyone broke her trust. Not a single person failed to show her how they were all different yet all the same. She found her unable to deal with the hypocrisy of humanity. Even the closest ones showed her it’s all fake. Some showed through actions and some broke her through words like Cinderella got daunted by her sisters and step-mom.

Words.. every single word said by someone important to us can either break our soul or awaken it. And that’s where her optimism came to the verge of getting demolished. She lost almost everyone and what was still with her was “herself”. She remembered how from “tangled” she learnt, “You don’t really need someone to complete you”. She wondered to herself, maybe her life was an opposite of those fairytales where they have a happy end, that hers began perfectly but this destroyed new normal was her end. But unfortunately or fortunately, it was not an end as what she had was her own self intact. She had the power to do wonders as she was always this way. She just needed to realise these few years weren’t her days. Soon she figured out she would get along this world, because she was “Belle” who could do exceptional things, changing a beast to a prince being an instance. She didn’t want someone to complete her, but someone to accept her completely. What she needed were permanent people, like Ella needed her Prince Charming  and the permanent ones aren’t that easy to find. She didn’t lack attention, she got lots of it, besides she hated it, she didn’t want to be surrounded by many, she just wanted to be understood, someone who could trust her and let her be herself without those restrictions of this unfair world, she was like a bird who wanted to be safely set free, like the “genie” who was set free by “Aladdin”.

But nothing in this world comes for free; even that genie had to grant wishes for getting released from that lamp. And somewhere deep inside, by now she knew this fact and was well aware of it. So she started trying to let herself free from the thought processes that caged her. But unfortunately, she’s still stuck in them “Rapunzel” was stuck in the tower. Now the thought of everything being settled in is a dream for her which she regularly sees as “sleeping beauty” said ‘If you dream a thing more than once, it’s sure to come true”.  She’s just waiting for her fairy godmother who actually resides deep inside her own soul to come to senses and let “her heart have wings, let her fly and let her touch every star in the sky”.

After all, a fairytale can have a happy end, but the reality strikes when things become messed up real bad and you find yourself in a delusional state. Real life is far, far away from fictitious tales but still the reality still lies in the fact that ‘if it’s not happy, then it’s not the end’. Just remember that “you’re the one who can fill your world with sunshine”.

All you need is yourself

It's Now or Never

It was a usual morning in the lockdown days of 2020 when I was half asleep and could see my mum sitting besides my bed caressing my forehead. As she stood up and went to the kitchen, I got up and greeted everyone with a fresh morning wish.

After a while I was all fresh and sat in front of my shabby study table with a cup of coffee in my hand. Seeing my mom and dad at the other corner of the room discussing about new business techniques, and my brother taking online classes, my thought processes started racing as I realised how our lives have taken a new turn following alternative methods of performing our daily life tasks.

I realised how this is the best time to accomplish what we've been ignoring since long. I felt that this is the best time to start it reason being that at this moment of time we've got utmost support and advices from experienced and precious people that we can treasure and learn from throughout our lives.

It seemed to me like a periodic change like we study in our history books, the ways a change on the world level came into effect. Though it wasn’t as big a thing as I was thinking, I started developing links and jumping from one incident to other I kept on digging my thoughts.

I took 2020 to 1945, when the attack of Hiroshima and Nagasaki happened, and then to the world wars, jumping to the colonial India which we studied as Modern History and further to the Mughal Empire ruling India and from this it further went on to the Vedic times and finally THE INDUS VALLEY CIVILISATION.

What a time it was! Most of you would not properly remember the civilization and same was the case with me which actually intrigued me to get in touch with again because unlike many others, I’ve always found history fascinating. I know it’s quite frustrating to get hold of all those dates but again studying it as pleasure activity just to get to know about it, isn’t that nice?? Maybe, it’s actually great for some of us!

Now, since I am a UPSC aspirant, I’ve got enough motivational lecture moments from the people around me on how studying about the past can help me get through the exams but all of us need a kick-start to actually do something worth our time.

So as soon as I finished my coffee, I realised that from a very long time I wasn’t getting a good enough excuse to start my civil services’ preps because every time I got stuck either in my thoughts or the famous ‘where should I start from?’ question prevented me from actually commencing, and that it, I felt it’s a ‘now or never’ moment this time. So I sat back and searched by book shelves in a wistful longing to find out my old history book of class 6th. But I found myself despondent as I remembered that a kid had once borrowed it from me. But you know you can’t just leave something incomplete at an instance when you’re so much willing to have it. So I searched through the web and downloaded an e-book of history, and this was how I began reading “THE HARAPPAN CIVILIZATION” for the second time the only difference being that this time I wasn’t forced to do it by some CBSE course curriculum, it was my own wish and interest to do so.

A feeling of positivity stroke that this time it won’t be a waste!....
